It happens to everyone. No matter who you are or where you live, you’re going to eventually develop those dreaded little lines under your eyes known as under eye wrinkles. Although they’re a natural result of age and environmental factors, people still react to them as if they’ve suddenly been told they only have two months to live. So it’s no wonder that people turn to all kinds of products and treatments to try to get rid of them.
Did Mother Know Best?
Although the exact year is not known, it’s been reported that as far back as the earliest civilizations women were looking for ways to eliminate fine lines and make their skin appear younger and healthier (no doubt the same year the mirror was invented!)
These remedies were passed down from generation to generation, with many surviving to this very day. So it may very well be that some of the remedies your mother passed down to you were actually ones that were used by ancient Egyptians or Greeks thousands of years ago!
Eye Massage – It turns out that one of the best home remedies for wrinkles under your eyes is one of the easiest: apply a drop of coconut, grape seed or olive oil to the tips of your pinkies and massage the area in a circular motion. Continue for several minutes until the oil has been absorbed into the skin.
Eye Exercises – Strengthen the under eye muscles to reduce lines and prevent new ones from forming. Place your middle fingers under your eye and use the under eye muscles to lift your fingers. Hold the position for three seconds before releasing. Repeat for a total of 10 times daily.
Facial Masks – Homemade eye masks are also very effective for reducing fine lines. One of the best eye masks to use is made from egg whites, because egg whites tighten and nourish skin. Leave one for at least 30 minutes and then rinse with warm water. Apply 2-3 times a week.
Foods to Tighten Skin – You can apply cucumber slices or the juice from green seedless grapes or a pineapple core directly under your eyes to tighten skin. Place the cucumber slices or rub the grape juice into your skin and leave for 20 minutes, then wash off. Do the same with the pineapple core, but for only 10 minutes.
Milk - Not only does milk do a body good, it also makes a great facial mask and is an effective way of getting rid of wrinkles. Milk moisturizes, softens and soothes skin, while at the same time tightening skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines. It also contains beta hydroxyl acids and lactic acid which gently exfoliates and conditions the skin.
Diet – Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and eat foods rich in antioxidants, such as beetroot, tomatoes, red peppers and kiwi. Beetroot and kiwis also contain an ingredient which stimulates collagen production, which is necessary for healthy skin. The vitamin C in red peppers and kiwi helps to rejuvenate skin cells.
Quit Smoking and Avoid Second-Hand Smoke – The particles in smoke are not only extremely harmful to skin, smoking dehydrates skin which leads to more wrinkles.
Don’t despair when you spot your first fine lines and wrinkles – there are probably dozens of home remedies in your cupboards right now that can help reduce or eliminate fine lines under your eyes in less than an hour. It turns out that the treatments passed down for generations may actually have been the best after all!
